Gamification in the Office – How Can Space Support Team Engagement?
2 min read
Gamification–the use of game-like mechanisms in environments not directly related to entertainment–can be an effective tool for supporting employee engagement, activity, and collaboration. And no, we are not talking only about Xbox consoles or foosball tables! In an office environment, gamification can take many different forms–from simple visual cues and challenges, through reward programmes, to solutions that engage entire teams.
How can gamification be used in the office?
Reward and recognition programmes
Systems that reward specific activities, such as using company benefits, participating in events, or engaging in physical activity.
Interactive workplace challenges
Elements that encourage specific behaviours, such as taking the stairs, having a short break, staying hydrated, or spending time around greenery.
Team initiatives
Shared activities, challenges, or fundraising campaigns can strengthen team integration and build a greater sense of belonging within the organisation.
An active work environment
Appropriate signage, messaging, and spatial solutions can encourage employees to move more throughout the day and make conscious use of different areas within the workplace.
Why should gamification be considered at the design stage?
The most effective solutions should not be random additions introduced only after the office fit-out has been completed. They are worth considering from the very beginning of the design process, so that they can be naturally integrated with workplace communication, functionality, and everyday patterns of use.
Gamification therefore sits at the intersection of design, wellbeing, and organisational culture. It requires collaboration between designers, HR teams, facility management, and those responsible for workplace strategy.
A thoughtfully designed workplace can support activity, engagement, and positive everyday habits.
