An office that supports parents is part of a responsible organisation

Demographic changes are having an increasingly visible impact on the labour market, and policies that support parents are becoming an important part of creating an attractive and responsible workplace.
This also applies to the physical office environment. A properly designed space for breastfeeding or expressing milk can make returning to work after parental leave significantly easier, while improving employees’ comfort and sense of security. The WELL Standard highlights that such a space should provide privacy, hygiene and appropriate conditions for use. In practice, this means a dedicated, lockable room located outside toilet facilities, with comfortable seating, access to electricity, refrigerated storage, access to water, and suitable lighting and ventilation.
Although these solutions are relatively simple, they can have a real impact on how an organisation functions. They can support the return to work, improve employee retention and demonstrate that employees’ needs are reflected not only in company policies, but also in the physical workplace.
A contemporary office should respond to more than a company’s operational needs. Increasingly, it also serves as a tool for supporting organisational culture, wellbeing and long-term people strategies. Designing a parent-friendly workplace can therefore become not an optional extra, but an integral part of a thoughtful workplace strategy.
